What will ARC offer me?

ARC offers volunteers the chance to spend several weeks living and working in some of Europe's most beautiful churches, alongside other young people and within the community living and working in that place. This is a unique opportunity to become part of the life of a famous church and a European city, and to discover and explore other cultures, traditions and languages.

What will I be doing?

ARC volunteers work as welcomers and tour guides in their native language.

How often will I be working?

ARC guides normally work five days each week, with two days set aside for organised trips and independent exploring. Evenings are set aside for free time to explore the city, although the group will often receive invitations for dinner and parties from the local community.

Where will I be living?

Accommodation is usually arranged in a student house, a school or sometimes in a monastery/convent connected with the church. Bedrooms may be shared on some projects but only ever with people of the same gender. Some projects are catered whereas on others you will be able to cater for yourselves.

Will I be paid?

ARC volunteers are not paid, but the local church funds all the costs of accommodation and food and often provides a small amount of 'pocket money' for group excursions/entertainment etc. The only expense not covered by ARC is the cost of travel to and from the host church; we also suggest that volunteers bring a certain amount of money for souvenirs/ice cream/beer etc. Where tips are given, advice should be sought from those organising the project about what is appropriate.

What does ARC expect of me in return?

ARC expects all its guides to act as ambassadors for their home country and for ARC UK. All volunteers are expected to be polite, punctual and enthusiastic, and to take an active part in living in a community. You will also be asked to participate in daily moments of prayer and reflection and perhaps to attend the main Sunday service.
